What is the difference between androgens and testosterone?

Many people often confuse androgens and testosterone, which is wrong. Androgens are a large family, containing a group of hormones; testosterone is only the most abundant one of androgens.

Androgens contain 6 types of hormones:

   1. Testosterone: is the main androgen. It is initially secreted by the testicles, and men secrete 7 mg per day. Most testosterone is bound to protein in the body, and free testosterone is really working. The total testosterone in menopause is not a lot, but the free testosterone concentration that really works is not enough, causing a series of changes such as decreased libido and impotence.

2, 5a Dihydrotestosterone DHT; is a metabolite of testosterone, the main androgen in prostate tissue (6 times higher than testosterone concentration), the main activator of androgen receptor AR, and its ability to bind to AR is 2~5 higher than testosterone Times. The ability to induce AR signals is more than 10 times greater than testosterone.

  3. Dehydroepiandrosterone DHEA: synthesized by the adrenal glands. It is like a raw material, the body can use it to synthesize a series of other hormones, including male testosterone and female estrogen.

   4. Androstenedione; secreted by the adrenal glands, testes and ovaries

5. Androstendiol: The main regulator of gonadotropin, has stronger ability to resist viral and bacterial infections, and reduce the body's morbidity and mortality

   6. Androsterone: only has a weak masculinization effect.
